New Study Reveals Findings on Social Media Scams

A new study has been conducted by cybersecurity firm, Lookout, about digital scams and where people encounter them. The study outlines a number of statistics on social media scams across different platforms. This includes how around 62% of Facebook users encounter scams every week. Overall, 46% of social media scam victims report losing $100 or more and the most frequent scam encountered across a number of platforms is ‘Win a Free Prize/ Free Gift’.

YouTube Adds New Features 

YouTube has introduced new YouTube Emotes to their platform, enabling users to express themselves through static images across streams and comments. They have started making Emotes for Gaming but are working on making new themes in the future for more communities on the platform, so keep an eye out for more updates in the future. Along with being able to access YouTube Emotes by clicking the smiley face icon, YouTube Emotes will also have specific names that can be typed to autocomplete in live chat (e.g :smile:).

Instagram Updates Account Status Page

Instagram has recently updated the account help page on their website for their new Account Status update, expanding to those with professional accounts. This will allow them to understand if their account’s content is eligible to be recommended to non-followers, and what they can do if it’s not. They are also introducing the ability to disagree with their decision to allow Instagram to take another look and improve their detection technology.

Meta Expands Creator Monetisation Options

Meta is introducing their Stars gifting season on Facebook, making it easier for creators to earn money on the platform during the festive period. From the beginning of December to the new year, fans can buy limited time seasonal virtual gifts to support their favourite creators. From  the 7th to 21st of December, stars creators are in with a chance of winning bonus stars if they reach certain targets on Facebook. Stars will be on sale from the 14th December 2022 to the 1st January 2023 and fans will be able to get an additional 5 - 20% more stars depending on the pack they purchase.

Instagram Announces New Features 

Instagram has introduced new features to the app this week to help users share and connect with followers. They’re rolling out Notes, which is a new way for users to share their thoughts using just text and emojis rather than creating a traditional grid post, Reel or Story. Also, Instagram is adding new features such as Candid Stories for users to capture what they’re doing in the moment. Group Profiles will also be added, allowing people to share posts and Stories in a profile specifically for the groups.
